AVSA 1,7 _SCREENING SYSTEM: TUTORIAL

The default opening page of AVSA 1,7 Screening is virtually identical to AVSA 1,8A.

The Recording window is entirely different. This is the window DISPLAYED immediately after selection of Recording tab

Select Recording Directory: Files , or any other directory desired, or in removable media.
Note that the recording directory will now reflect: C:\Program Files\AVSA_1_7\Files
Enter the Subject name: Pilot_AA and click on ‘Filename Example’ this action will create a file for Mr AA Pilot under C:\Program Files\AVSA_1_7\Files\Pilot_AA

After clicking on Filename Example, confirmation of created file will be displayed underneath the click button
as  Pilot_AA (Date).001.wav  which indicates that the program is prepared to accept a recording under given name. If there is no time ( under certain covert circumstances) to create a subject file, this step may be excluded.

Note that the recording box is emitting a Green line, which indicates that although program is prepared, it is not yet in Recording mode.

When recording is to commence , place the mouse pointer in green toggle box and click.
Then press Spacebar when ready and recording commences.
Green Line changes to Yellow (record mode) and elapsed timer starts. Red  numerals, in seconds.

As  AVSA captures words uttered it assigns SV’s, and a vertical colour (running) bar commences to display vertically. Quick recognition is enabled by coloured blocks.
The vertically ascending array (main graph) provides a running display of how many (%) of words were captured in each Stress Segment.
Note: Stress Segments are in 10 Sectors, ranging from Dark Green through Yellows, Oranges, to Reds.
The split screen just above the main Sector Array changes display roughly every 2 seconds to indicate a trend (if there is one) and displays a captured word & it’s derived graphic and the SV to the left of the graphic display.
The right side split screen indicates a running trend graph of how any words were captured in the Stress sectors
0-25 / 25-50 / 5- 75 / 75 +
The examiner / operator thus has FOUR running displays to warn him of any Deceptive Utterances and the Overall DI or NDI trend of the target being screened.

The default recording time is 5min 30 sec per file. When the timer indicates that the file is full (5’ 30”) further files may be created for same subject by pressing spacebar. When interview has culminated, there may be several files recorded, dependant on how long the interview lasted. In this case we see that Mr AA Pilot required 5 files.
001.wav à 005.wav.

To view the files once recording has been stopped by a final press of Spacebar, click on Select WAV Files tab.
Then click on Files in the dark blue Input directory. Recorded files for Pilot_AA will appear in the Yellow panel on right side. Click on any file to see it’s contents in the Display Window.

In this example we have clicked on, and opened 004.wav. The Display window opens and the words captured are displayed together with their  Stress Values. The operator can listen to each word in isolation by clicking in lower half of graphic, or by clicking ‘Listen To Frame’. By successive pressing of ‘Next Frame’ the conversation can be listened to as a continuous thread.

A sampling of free flowing narrative being examined, utilising Compression Factor 6.
Examiner may toggle Compression Ratios to suit personal taste, in order to conduct manual scoring if so desired.

Structured Question Protocols may be used in Ver 1,7. The Examiner calls back the Display from the Select WAV Files tab, clicks on the test required to score. Then isolate the CQ and REL responses and tab them according to the Formula provided in the Quest (Protocol) Folder.  Only CQ and REL responses will be tabbed. Thereafter the Scoring Protocol is selected via the Assign Protocol drop down menu, and clicking on ‘Exec Estimate’.

The ‘Map Answers’ window is used to verify that all CQ and REL responses were tabbed.

In this example, the ‘Map Answers’ window confirms that the RQ’s : 4, 7, 10  and REL’s: 5, 8, 11 were captured.
This is a 12 Question ZOC which is a standard, validated PDD protocol.

Now close the Map Answers window. Select AVZOC_STANDARD from the Assign Protocol drop down menu.
Click on ‘Exec Estimate’ and the Test Result is provided.

Returning to the Select WAV Files tab, we will see that the chart just scored has its SV Result entered in the appropriate column, in Yellow panel. Once all test charts have been scored, examiner may tick the open boxes adjacent to the SV scores, in order to arrive at Exam (Average) Score.
